Chemical Bonding _Paraphrasing skills

Paraphrasing is important in scientific writing as we are not allowed to use direct quotes in scholarly papers. Using a variety of paraphrasing strategies is really important as such.

 

One very common strategy is to use synonyms. The following task will help you practice the use of synonyms:

 

 

  1. When chemical reactions take place atoms combine to form compounds.

  2. The properties of atoms allow them to form compounds by losing, gaining or even sharing electrons.

  3. After atoms have been joined together by a chemical bond, they have acquired a more stable arrangement.

  4. With electron dot notation, each dot represents an outer shell electron.

  5. Atoms other than the noble gases can acquire the same type of stability by obtaining eight electrons.

  6. A covalent bond is a chemical bond in which two atoms share two electrons.

  7. After a fluorine molecule has been formed, there is proof of its stability since fluorine is always found in F2 molecules.

  8. In several cases, the dash is used together with the dot notation.

 

NB. Please note that replacing only one word in a sentence is not enough. Paraphrasing strategies need to be combined effectively so that the overall meaning is the same but the words and structures used are different.
