The general electronic configuration of p-block elements is ns2np1-6 (Except Helium

Reducing nature decreases from left to right in every period, while oxidizing nature increases. Nature is reduced from top to bottom in a group. Halogens are powerful oxidizers.There is a consistent increase in non-metallic character from left to right. Non-metallic character, on the other hand, decreases from top to bottom in the groups.The last electron in the atoms of the p-block elements enters the p-subshell

Today we will be discussing properties and trends of P block and in particular the nitrogen family (Group 15).

This week, we will be revising what we learnt in week 2 with a listening task on the 'states of matter' and formality. Then we will read a very basic introduction on 'the periodic table the atomic structure' and familiarise ourselves with relavant vocabulary. At the end of the session, in groups we will take part in an online quiz about trends in the periodic table and atomic structure. May the best team win.

1. Liquids take the shape of the container they're in.

2. The molecules of liquids are closer together than gases, but not as close as solids.

3. Liquids can be compressed slightly, but require a significant amount of pressure to do so.
