Our group is part of the Environmental Chemical Processes Laboratory (ECPL), operating within the Department of Chemistry at the University of Crete, one of Greece's most prominent higher education institutions. The group's research focuses on the development of advanced analytical chemistry techniques for determining metal species, including metal containing nanoparticles, in environmental and biological matrices, and for investigating their interaction with biomolecules. In order to achieve this, a wide range of separation techniques (HPLC, nanoHPLC, ion mobility spectrometry, affinity chromatography) coupled on-line with mass spectrometry (electrospray, sonic-spray ionization, nanoelectrospray, atmospheric pressure chemical ionization, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry ICP-MS) are being developed and used. Single particle ICP-MS is also being developed for nanoparticle counting and characterization.

Highlights and News

[Aug. 17] We are currently seeking junior or experienced post-docs with an excellent track record in Analytical, Bioanalytical or Physical Chemistry, that are eligible and willing to apply for a Marie Sklodowska Curie fellowship. Our group has hosted 5 Marie Curie postdoctoral fellows so far and has the expertise to prepare competitive research proposals under the MSCA scheme for the following research project:

“Ion Mobility Spectrometry on-line with Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry: A New Analytical Tool for Studying Physicochemical Matrix Effects Occurring in an Inductively Coupled Plasma, for Determining Metal Containing Nanoparticles and Metalloproteins”

[Sep. 17] The IMA 2017 conference was successfully held in Heraklion 17-21 Sept 2017. A great deal of hard work was put into its organization by all members of the SAP group, as well as the other organizers’ groups, especially that of Professor Maria Ochsenkühn-Petropoulou. Many thanks to all, especially to all our invited speakers who delivered outstanding presentations. Looking forward to seeing friends and colleagues at the next IMA meeting to be organized by the Univ. of Ioannina in 2019.


[04-June-16] Our poster on "Paired-Ion Sonic-Spray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (PI-SSI-MS) for the analysis of anions: Progress towards even lower limits of detection, E. Mavrakis, L. Mavroudakis, S. Pergantis" was presented at the 64th American Society for Mass Spectrometry Conference in San Antonio, TX.


[June-16] Another Nanoparticle paper from our group in collaboration with the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research as part of the AquaNano project "Flow injection with on-line dilution and single particle inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry for monitoring silver nanoparticles in seawater and in marine microorganisms, C. Toncelli, K. Mylona, M. Tsapakis and S. A. Pergantis"" was published in the J. Anal. At. Spectrom., 2016, 31, 1430.


[29-Feb-16] Our paper on "Using Nanoparticles to Determine the Transport Efficiency of Microflow and Nanoflow Nebulizers in ICP-MS" has just been published as an Advance Article in JAAS.


[15-Sep-15] Our study on the occurrence and environmental significance of methylated arsenic species in atmospheric particles has been published in the ACS journal Environmental Science & Technology.


A collaborative publication in Analytical Chemistry (ACS) with ETH (Prof. Detlef Gunther) and the German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing describing a new method for determining metal containing nanoparticles using ICP-MS with a microdroplet generator and single particle sample introduction. We welcome Sonia F. Menéndez, a PhD candidate from the University of Ovideo, joining us for a 3 month period to identify major Zn-containing proteins present in milk. (22 Apr. 2015)


We would like to welcome Sergio Carneado Moreno (PhD candidate at the University of Barcelona) who is joining our group for a 3 month stay. He will be conducting a study on the migration of Sb and its speciation in raki and tsipouro. (08 Apr. 2015)


Our paper on improving the sensitivity of Sonic Spray Ionization MS by using the triboluminescent additive 3-nitrobenzonitrile (3-NBN) has just been published in Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry. (18 Oct. 2014)


Our two Erasmus MSc students Katrin Böhm and Annika Räsch have just completed their 5 month stay with our group. We thank them for their excellent work and wish them the best in the continuation of their studies and careers! (01 Aug. 2014)


Our group's collaborative work with K. Francesconi and D. Kuehnelt from the Univ. of Graz on "Concurrent quantitative HPLC-mass spectrometry profiling of small selenium species in human serum and urine after ingestion of selenium supplements" has just been published in J. of Trace Elem. in Med. and Biol.. Many congratulations to Alexandra Tsirigotaki for her excellent work!


Aqua-Nano Project: Our group is part of the Aqua-Nano project investigating the effects of silver nanoparticles on natural plankton communities on the basis of independent mesocosm experiments and a series of laboratory experiments performed at HCMR facilities. We will be conducting the single particle ICP-MS analysis. (01 July 14)


Marie Curie Post-doctoral Fellowships: We are seeking junior or experienced post-docs with an excellent track record in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or Bioanalytical Chemistry, that are eligible to apply for Marie Sklodowska Curie fellowships, in order to support them throughout their application to the EU. Our group has so far hosted 5 Marie Curie postdoctoral fellows and is willing to offer its expertise for preparing a competitive research proposal in a topic related to our research interests. Interested researchers should send a full curriculum vitae and a description of the project (maximum two pages) to spergantis@chemistry.uoc.gr by July 18, 2014.


Congratulations to Prof. Maria Kanakidou for being elected Head of our Department. (17- June 14).


Spiros Pergantis attended the 7th Nordic Plasma Spectrochemistry conference in Loen, Norway. He presented an invited talk on "Pneumatic Nebulizer: a versatile analytical tool for integrating atomic and molecular mass spectrometry for the analysis of elemental species, metalloproteins and engineered nanoparticles". This great scientific meeting, combined spectacular scenary with meeting many friends from all over the world. (1-4 June 14).


We welcome Dr. Claudio Toncelli to our group. He will be developing novel analytical methodologies for nanoparticle detection in environmental matrices, as part of a collaboartion with Dr M. Tsapakis from the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (19-03-14).


We welcome our two Erasmus MSc students Annika Räsch and Katrin Böhm from the University of Applied Sciences, Krefeld, Germany. They will be conducting their research project with our group (04-02-14).

MSc and Undergraduate projects now available with our group (01-02-14).


Our new Eksigent nanoLC has been installed and is being used with the NexION 300XX ICP- MS for nano flow injection and nanoLC (20-12-13).
