Exam content will be covering Acids and bases (unit 9), Water (unit 10) Lab report (unit 8) Polymers (unit 11), graphs and Charts, Papers on Bioplastics and the units we will do for the book Science Communication (units 2, 3, 4, 5) Enzymes and biomolecules and unit 13 with criteria for Powerpoint presentations.

Exam papers will include the same sections as in English 1 plus two more tasks. One where I ask you to a) revise two powerpoint presentation slides and b) revise a paragraph from a lab report. A typical Engish 1 paper normally includes a reading on a familiar topic and comprehension questions, vocabulary tasks on familiar terminology, a grammar task (on something we have done in class), a listening task, a wriitng task (e.g. write a report based ona diagram).

Επειδή μου το ζητήσατε. Σας ανεβάζω την ανακοίνωση για την εργασία επιλογής που πιθανότατα σας ενδιαφέρει να υποβάλετε μέχρι τα τέλη Ιανουαρίου 2026.

Καλέιστε να δημιουργήσετε ατομικά ή σε ομάδα ένα βιντεάκι 5 λεπτών το οποίο θα παρουσιάζει με έυστοχο και ενδιαφέρον τρόπο (στην Αγγλική γλώσσα) τι προσφέρουν τα εργαστήρια Χημείας (Προτπτυχιακά και/ή Μεταπτυχιακά). Στα εργαστήρια καλό είναι να κλείσετε πρώτα ραντεβού με το υπέυθυνο και να μιλήσετε μαζί του για 5-10 λεπτά ώστε να πάρετε και την άδειά του για να βιντεοσκοπήσετε (διευκρινίζοντας τις συνθήκες). Τα βιντέακια θα τα ανεβάσετε στην συνέχεια στο Youtube σε προσωπικό σας λογαριασμό μέχρι τις 06/02/26. Στην συνέχεια εμείς θα τα δημοσιέυσουμε στο UOC news και θα καλέσουμε όλη την Πανεπιστημική κοινότητα να ψηφίζει το καλύτερο! Θα ακολουθήσει βράβευση ένα μήνα μετά από τον πρόεδρο του τμήματος! Στην πρώτη διαλεξη που έκανα, έδωσα τη δομή της εξέτασης στο τέλος του εξαμήνου. Καλό όμως είναι ωστόσο να θυμόμαστε ότι η κατανόηση κειμένου, οι ακουστικές ασκήσεις και η έκθεση που θα χρειαστεί να γράψετε στις τελικές εξετάσεις θα είναι σε κείμενα (ή ακουστικά αρχεία ) με παρόμοια θέματολογία με αυτά που έχει το βιβλιο (αλλά όχι ακριβώς το ίδιο).

Dear All,

I just received your comments for the assessment of the course. Your comments are really spot on. I got the message that the seminar room is not a good choice so I promise we are going to be using a lecture theatre instead, hopefully in A2 (as I hate the big one).

Some of you also asked me to provide definitions of terms slowly so that you can write them down. I will do that.

English 2 is the second part of the same course really and we will start lesson in the beginning of Ferbruary. Remember that the exam will be partly online so please if you do not have a laptop to bring over, let me know in advance.

Σύντομα βιογραφικά στοιχεία για τον ομιλήτή

Ο Richard Zare κατέχει την καθηγητική έδρα Marguerite Blake Wilbur στις Φυσικές Επιστήμες στο Πανεπιστήμιο Stanford των ΗΠΑ, στο οποίο είναι Καθηγητής στο Τμήμα Χημείας από το 1977 (chemistry.stanford.edu/people/richard-zare). Διεξάγει πρωτοποριακή έρευνα στα πεδία της Φασματοσκοπίας, Δυναμικής Χημικών Αντιδράσεων και Αναλυτικής Χημείας. Το εκτενές διδακτικό έργο περιλαμβάνει τη διδασκαλία του εισαγωγικού μαθήματος της Γενικής Χημείας και μαθημάτων που εστιάζονται στη διεπιστημονική μελέτη βιολογικών συστημάτων με έμφαση στις αλληλεπιδράσεις του φωτός με βιομόρια σε ζώντες οργανισμούς. Περίληψη της ομιλίας (στην Αγγλική)

This lecture is based on a course I have taught for the last five years to entering undergraduate students, which has become the most popular course in the Stanford Chemistry Department. The course, ‘Chemistry in the Kitchen’, examines the chemistry relevant to food and drink preparation, both in homes and in restaurants, which makes what we consume more pleasurable. Good cooking is more often considered an art rather than a science, but a small bit of understanding goes a long way to make the preparation and consumption of food and drink more enjoyable. The intention is to have demonstrations and tastings as a part of every class meeting. We examine some rather familiar items: eggs, dairy products, meats, breads, vegetables, pastries, and carbonated beverages. We shall playfully explore the chemistry that turns food into meals. In this lecture I am planning to concentrate on milk (dairy).

Dear All,

On 14th December 2023 we will have a MOCK test. Attendance in this is optional but it you decide you want to take part in it, it will count as a weekly sample of work. The purpose of this test is twofold. First and foremost, it allows you to see what the real exam will be like. During the mock test you will be asked to submit the same exam paper twice. Once individually (within 45 minutes) and once as a team with other 4 people (45 min). After you submit the test as a group, I will be providing the correct answers or any feedback required based on a random student sample.

Although the mark does not have any weighting towards the final exam, it will allow you to have a clearer idea of what you need to study. The second reason I am using this 3-stage exam (as a MOCK TEST) is because I want to test in my class whether this method could or should be used in Universities to replace traditional mid-term exams (Πρόοδοι). This is why at the end of the exam, and on this platform I will be asking you to complete a questionnaire evaluating the pedagogical efficacy, advantages and disadvantages of this method for University level exams. Taking part in the mock test or completing the questionnaire is optional and you are not in anyway forced to complete part or all of this procedure.

The semester ends on 21st December 2023. Next week we will have a lesson on Chemical bonds.

Presentations

Presentations are optional and provide an extra 20% bonus to those who deliver it. Presentations will be given only online on 21st December (and if required on 8th January 2024) and all students will have to present the same paper which can be found in the e-class documents. I will share with you a google document with the dates and times (ranging from 11.00 until 18.00). Students who wish to use the Chemistry Department computer lab to give the presentation need to let me know so as to book the room for them.

The google doc will contain the ZOOM LINK for the online presentation but I am sharing it here as well for your convenience. Use the following google doc to complete your surname only in order to book a time for the presentation. After your presentation you need to attend at least one more of your peers and if required give some (positive) feedback based on the CRITERIA shared in e-class documents.

Dear All,

You can now upoad your sample of work in Assignments week 1. Samples of work account for 20% of the final mark and they basically require you to upload photos of your classwork on the platform.

As the platform allows only one file to be uploaded, I have discovered that the best way to do it is to copy and paste pictures of your work in a word doc (unless you have a pdf writer/converter).

Απαγορευεται η αντιγραφή κειμένου από το paper.

Oι διαφάνειες να είναι πολυτροπικές (με περισσότερα visuals και λιγότερα κείμενα/λόγια).

Dear All,

We will have a lesson on the 15th December but the week after (week 12) we will not have a class. I will be giving private tutorials to students who are planning to submit their video screencast. So, here is what you need to do:

Prepare part of your work and submit it before the deadline. This can be for example just the slides. Send me an email notifying me and adding a audio link from vocaroo in which I will be able to hear how you are planning to talk us throught he prenstation.

My feedback will be send back to you by the 25th and if I am late due to "high demand" I will surely grand you an extension for a couple of days until I finish. The point of all this is that I want you to have excellent presentation skills before you upload your final version of your video/ppt.

No sumamry or text is required. I guess you will have the title of the actual paper in the cover page and a proper refernce at the end.

Σημερα θα σας φέρω τα περυσινά θέματα τα οποία θα κάνουμε ώς ασκήσεις στο μαθημα ώστε να έχετε εικόνα του τι να περιμένετε στην Εξεταστική. You just need to take photos of the work we have done in class.

As the platform only allows you to upload ONLY ONE file, please make sure you copy and paste all photos taken in ONE file (either doc or pdf) and then upload it. Also, note that you need to upload your work in Assignments not as a message. Messages are supposed to notify for something urgent.

It's not the end of the world this time as you did not know how the platform works. Let me know if you cannot do it next time.

abstract

The lecture will begin with a brief history of the origins of the periodic table, beginning with the contributions of Lavoisier, Dalton, Döbereiner and others. I will proceed to the Karlsruhe conference and the ensuing independent discovery of the periodic table by as many as six individuals, culminating with Mendeleev’s table just over 150 years ago. We will move on to the challenges that the periodic table faced, such as the existence of pair reversals and the discovery of the noble gases. Next came several discoveries in physics, including X-rays, radioactivity and the electron, all of which had a profound effect on the understanding of the periodic table. Research in atomic structure beginning at the turn of the 20th century prompted some physicists such as J.J. Thomson and Niels Bohr to begin to seek a fundamental explanation for the periodic table in terms of electronic structure. The later developed quantum mechanics of Heisenberg, Schrödinger, Pauli and others led to a more rigorous explanation, although some open questions remain up to present times. For example, there is yet no fundamental explanation for the empirical rule that the occupation of atomic orbitals proceeds via the simple n + l rule. In addition, relativistic effects are being increasingly considered in attempts to understand the heavier elements in particular. Finally, several other remaining open questions will be discussed, such as the membership of group 3 of the periodic table, alternative representations such as the 32-column format, the left-step periodic table and whether there may exist an ‘optimal form’ of the periodic table.
