Supramolecular systems are still simple relative to DNA, viruses etc. They do not yet match biological systems in subtlety or function – therein lies the challenge! Supramolecular chemistry is a field where a striking evolution is taking place. The basic concept is to create arrangements from molecular building blocks which are interconnected by chemical bonds, predominantly of noncovalent character. This idea originates from living organisms : Natural supermolecules are abundant in biological systems, where their proper functioning is of crucial importance for life. Research in supramolecular chemistry is driven by the belief that appropriately designed molecular materials may be synthesized and arranged in similar, however artificial structures, which will eventually fullfill specific tasks and be useful for technological applications. An intriguing concept to obtain the corresponding molecular architectures and nanostructures is molecular self-assembly.
