Apostolos K. Rizos
Professor of Physical Chemistry 

Apostolos Rizos was born in Vasilika, Larissa, Greece, finished his high school in Nea Ionia, Volos,  and received his B.S. in Chemistry in 1979 from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. He went to the US in 1980 to pursue graduate studies and received his M.A. Degree in 1983 (Chemical Physics) and Ph.D. degree in 1985 (Physical Chemistry) both from the State University of New York at Binghamton under the supervision of Prof. David C. Doetschman. The title of his Master Thesis was "Electron Spin-Echo and Saturation Recovery study of Fluorenylidene Single Crystals" and the title of his Ph.D. Thesis was "Chemical Kinetics of Nitrosylhemoglobin Ligand Exchange and Photochemistry". His post-doctoral research position was on resonance Raman studies of biological systems in the Department of Biophysics at Northeastern University (1985-1986). After spending 12 months in the Greek Army (obligatory military service) he then moved to the University of Crete. In January of 1991 he was elected as a lecturer in Physical Chemistry. In 2000 he was promoted to Associate Professor and from June of 2007 to Professor. At the end of August of 2024 he completed 37 years of active service and retired from his duties.
